  1. a famous US court case in which John Scopes, a BIOLOGY teacher, was taken to a court of law in 1925 for teaching Darwin's theory of EVOLUTION, because this was against the law in the state of Tennessee, where the story of the CREATION as told in the Old Testament of the Bible had to be taught in state schools. He was defended by the lawyer Clarence DARROW, but was found guilty.
